Baseball swept by Benedictine in first NAC games away from Kapco Park

LISLE, Ill. – Playing its first games away from Kapco Park in nearly two months, the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team could not muster much offense as it was swept by Benedictine University Sunday afternoon. The host Eagles won by scores of 9-1 and 7-1.

The Falcons continued their recent struggles at the plate as they were able to manage just eight hits and two runs over 18 innings of play. Junior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) was able to record three hits in the twinbill, while freshman Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.) added a pair of hits in the opener.

Benedictine (22-7, 12-4 NAC) got strong starting pitching performances from Mike Irgang and Chris Jordan in the doubleheader sweep. Both starters went seven innings for BenU, combining for seven strikeouts and allowing just one run in 14 innings of work.

In the opener CUW could not avoid the big innings as Benedictine scored its nine runs in three innings, including tallying two in the bottom of the first. The Eagles biggest frame in game one was in the bottom of the fourth, when they plated four runs. The Falcons (10-18, 8-8 NAC) scored their lone run in the opener in the top of inning six when Scheuerlein singled in Burgert.

Junior Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) took the loss for CUW as he threw the first four innings, allowing six runs. Also pitching for the Falcons in game one were sophomores Michael Klaver (Germantown, Wis.) and Matthew Brueser (Oconomowoc, Wis.). Brueser finished the game by throwing two scoreless innings.

Game two again saw the host Eagles come out and put two runs on the board in the first inning. After the two-run first, Falcons starter Austin Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) calmed down after the two-run first and held the Eagles scoreless over his next four innings of work.

The bottom of the sixth is when Benedictine would break the game open as they plated four runs, including an RBI single from leadoff batter Tim Hendricks, who finished the two games with seven hits in nine at bats.

CUW managed just two hits in game two as Burgert tallied one, while freshman Taylor Devenport (Saukville, Wis.) added the other. Burgert also had an RBI groundout in the ninth inning, scoring senior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.).

The Falcons will return to Kapco Park Tuesday when they host Cardinal Stritch in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. and both games will be seven innings in length.
