MEQUON, Wis. – Cardinal Stritch University used strong pitching and a big offensive display in game two to sweep a doubleheader from the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team Thursday night at Kapco Park. The Wolves took the opener 5-2 before routing CUW in the nightcap, 15-3.
The Falcons were the first to put a tally on the scoreboard in game one when freshman Brock Bateman (Pewaukee, Wis.) plated freshman Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.) with an RBI-groundout in the bottom of the second. The Falcons would only manage one more run the rest of the game as the double play ball proved to be an inning killer for them as they grounded into four throughout the game.
The CUW (10-21) lead would hold until the top of inning four as Cardinal Stritch plated three runs, two coming off double from Kasey Lewandowski. Lewandowski would add two more RBIs in the sixth inning as CSU went on to the 5-2 game one victory.
Despite not being the starter in the lineup card Robert Hagerdorn was the first pitcher CSU used on Thursday and he was very effective, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing one earned. Mitchell Schnulle picked up his fourth save of the season by pitching the final two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) took the loss for the Falcons, throwing six innings and allowing five earned.
Senior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) and sophomore Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) each tallied two hits for the Falcons in game one. Bateman drove in both runs for CUW.
Game two was all Wolves as they built a 3-0 lead before exploding for five in the fourth inning en route to a 15-3 win. CSU (15-24) outhit the Falcons 20-3 in the second game as eight of its players tallied two hits. The Falcons plated its three runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to five straight walks to begin the frame from Wolves pitchers.
Tyler Laverdue picked up the win for CSU as he pitched six innings before being relieved without recording an out in the seventh inning. Sophomore Michael Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) was charged with the loss for the Falcons.
CUW returns to conference play Saturday when they host Dominican University in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader. First pitch between the Falcons and Starts is set for 12 p.m. at Kapco Park.
