Baseball falls to No. 3 UW-Whitewater in regular season finale

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team closed outs its regular season schedule against the third-ranked team in the latest D3Baseball.com poll, falling to UW-Whitewater 15-2 Tuesday at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks pounded out 16 hits and stole 10 bases in the win over CUW. In an attempt to save pitching for the six-team NAC Tournament, which begins Thursday at Kapco Park, the Falcons used six different pitchers over eight innings.

CUW (15-25) scored a run in the top of the first inning as sophomore Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) singled in senior Daniel Mueller (West Bend, Wis.) putting the Falcons ahead 1-0. The Warhawks had an answer in the bottom of the frame, however, as they plated five runs to go up 5-1. UWW would add three in the second and two more in the third as they build a comfortable 10-1 lead after three complete.

Whitewater (31-5) would continue adding to its lead and led 15-1 until the top of the ninth inning when freshman Christian Woodfin (Birmingham, Mich.) scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Derek Saugstad (West Allis, Wis.), making the final tally 15-2 in favor of UWW.

Junior Austin Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) took the loss for CUW as he pitched the opening inning. Brock Liston went five innings for the Warhawks as he gained his second win of the season.

Mueller and Sharon each led the CUW offense as both players recorded a pair of hits in three trips to the plate. UWW got two hits from four different players, including Dylan Friend, who scored a game-high four runs.

CUW will return to action when they begin play in the six-team Northern Athletics Conference Tournament, which is set for Thursday through Saturday at Kapco Park. The fifth-seeded Falcons will take on No. 2 Benedictine University at 4 p.m. The first game of the tournament is set for 10 a.m. Thursday and four games will be played the opening day.
