FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin men's ACHA hockey team was defeated 6-1 by the Marian Sabres on Saturday night. With the loss, the Falcons' record now stands at 13-5 overall and 4-2-0 in conference play.
The game began as a defensive battle, with neither team finding the back of the net in the first period. Junior goaltender Austin Bartell (New Berlin, Wis.) made nine saves in the opening frame to keep the Sabres off the scoreboard.
However, Marian broke the deadlock early in the second period, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. The Falcons responded when senior Andrew Malek (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored to trim the deficit to 2-1. Malek's goal was assisted by fellow senior Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.) and sophomore Jaxon Hill (Bismarck, N.D.).
Unfortunately, Marian answered with a third goal to extend their lead to 3-1.
The third period proved challenging for CUW, as the Sabres added three more unanswered goals to secure a 6-1 victory.
Bartell finished with 23 saves in the loss, showing strong effort in net throughout the game.
The Falcons will look to bounce back as they prepare for a weekend series against the Thunder of Trine University.
