MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons downed the defending national champions at the CUW Showcase on Saturday evening. The Concordia Wisconsin ACHA team improved to 3-2-0 on the young season with the 5-3 victory over Indiana.
The Falcons started the evening with a penalty kill halfway through the first period.
Senior Nolan Judge (Glendale, Ariz.) lit the lamp with 7:52 left in the first period from near the Indiana bench off a faceoff victory from freshman Mason Musel (Duluth, Minn.).
The Blue and White struck 90 seconds later on the power play off the stick of senior Tommy Cassel (Grafton, Wis.) on top of the near circle from passes from senior Rex Staudacher (Yorkville, Ill.) and senior Andrew Malek (Milwaukee, Wis.).
Indiana dampened the energy with a goal 11 seconds later.
The Hoosiers were able to fight off a five-on-three penalty to start the second period.
Indiana tossed some high-quality shots at the Concordia net but freshman Tug Staudacher (Yorkville, Ill.) came away with even better saves.
IU tied the game on the power play with 9:40 left in the second period.
The Falcons capitalized on a two-on-one advantage with senior Nick Roberts (Ding Dong, Texas) scoring off a pass from Tommy Cassel and a secondary assist to freshman Rocco Cicirello (Mequon, Wis.).
The second-period scoring ended on the power play for CUW with a goal from senior Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.) off assists from Rex Staudacher and sophomore Jaxon Hill (Bismarck, N.D.).
Indiana applied some pressure early in the third period with a goal in the first minute.
The Hoosiers tried to capitalize on a six-on-four advantage but Rex Staudacher sent the puck the length of the ice into the net in the final two seconds.
The Hoosiers held a 42-27 advantage in shots on Saturday.
Tug Staudacher secured 39 saves for his first collegiate victory.
The Falcons finish the CUW Showcase on Sunday against St. Thomas. The Tommies are undefeated in the showcase.
