ACHA Hockey Wins Shootout at Lake Superior State
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Concordia Wisconsin ACHA Hockey team wrapped up a busy weekend up north in Michigan on Sunday. The Falcons picked up a 2-1 shootout victory to pick up the 4-3 victory at Lake Superior State. The Falcons improve to 7-3-0 in their first 10 games.
The Falcons struck first on Sunday on the power play when senior Tommy Cassel (Grafton, Wis.) tipped a shot from senior Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis. into the net with 12:53 left in the first period. Senior Rex Staudacher (Yorkville, Ill.) fed Wilderman with the secondary assist.
The Lakers bounced back with a goal 39 seconds after the Concordia goal.
Lake Superior State scored two more goals to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
The CUW power play struck again in the second period when senior Andrew Malek (Milwaukee, Wis.) found Tommy Cassel wide open at the back door with a secondary assist to Rocco Cicirello with 15:05 left in the second period.
Tommy Cassel left the Lakers faithful speechless with his third power-play goal of the day with 6:22 left in the second period. Andrew Malek connected the pass to Cassel in front of the crease and sophomore Jaxon Hill (Bismarck, N.D.) had the secondary assist.
For the second-straight Sunday, the Falcons went into overtime. This time, neither team was able to score and a shootout was needed.
Rocco Cicirello started the shootout with a goal through the five-hole.
Junior Austin Bartell (New Berlin, Wis.) came up with a save against Derrick Brown to give the Falcons the lead after the first round.
The Lakers tied the shootout after round two with a goal
Garrett Wilderman also found the open five-hole to give the Falcons the lead again.
Seth Stock had an opportunity to extend the shootout for LSSU, but Bartell blocked the shot to win the shootout.
Austin Bartell finished with 25 saves against the Lakers. Freshman Tug Staudacher (Yorkville, Ill.) had eight saves in the start.
Lake Superior State held a 36-31 advantage in shots on Sunday.
Concordia Wisconsin did not allow LSSU to score on any of the six power-play opportunities.
The Falcons return to action on Friday as NCHL play resumes against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
