Third Period Lifts Liberty Past ACHA Hockey

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin ACHA Hockey team hosted Liberty in the first game of the Concordia Wisconsin Showcase on Friday night. The Flames picked up a 6-4 victory to improve to 5-0-0 on the year and send CUW to 2-2-0.

The Flames started the scoring in the second minute of the game on a deflection on the side of the net.

Liberty looked to add to the lead with a power play after the goal but the Concordia defense stood tall.

CUW had an opportunity on the power play after a hitting-from-behind call, but could not capitalize.

The Birds tied the game on their second power play of the game when senior Tommy Cassel (Grafton, Wis.) tapped the puck in off a scrum in front of the net off assists from sophomore Jaxon Hill (Bismarck and senior Andrew Malek (Milwaukee, Wis.).

Concordia was able to kill another penalty to end the first period to send the teams into the first intermission tied at one.

The Falcons started the second period with a two-on-one opportunity and freshman Rocco Cicirello (Mequon, Wis.) scored a short-handed goal off a pass from Tommy Cassel.

CUW had just killed off a penalty when Liberty tied the game 2:05 into the period.

Tommy Cassel struck again as he sliced through the Liberty defense and scored despite a three-on-one advantage.

The Falcon penalty kill struck again 19 seconds into the third period when senior Rex Staudacher (Yorkville, Ill.) stole the puck and tossed the puck into the back of the cage.

The Flames cut into the lead with a shorthanded goal with 10:24 remaining. They tied the game at 7:25 on a shot from the near circle.

Liberty reclaimed the lead on the four-on-three power play and extended the lead two minutes later with another power-play goal.

Senior Austin Bartell (New Berlin, Wis.) finished with 29 saves.

The Flames held a 35-28 advantage in shots on Friday. Tommy Cassel led the attack with seven shots.

The Falcons continue the CUW Showcase on Saturday afternoon when they host the reigning national champion Hoosiers of Indiana.
