ACHA Hockey Outworks Wisconsin

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin ACHA hockey team outlasted Wisconsin in a battle of two of the best teams in the state. The Falcons picked up a 5-4 victory to improve to 2-0-0.

The Falcons scored their first first-period goal of the season 1:18 into the game when senior Tommy Cassel (Grafton, Wis.) scored with a goal in front of the goal on a sharp-angled shot off a pass from freshman Rocco Cicirello (Mequon, Wis.) from behind the net.

Three minutes later, sophomore Owen Almburg (Glenview, Ill.) added to the lead with a blast off a pass from Tommy Cassel from behind the net and a secondary assist to senior Nick Roberts (Milwaukee, Wis.).

The Badgers scored as a power play expired to start the second-period scoring 4:31 into the second frame.

Tommy Cassel responded with his own goal four minutes later when he went bar down from the high post.

Senior Andrew Malek (Milwaukee, Wis.) stole the puck on the penalty kill and made the Badgers pay as he scored a shorthanded goal 17:48 into the period.

The Badgers cut into the lead early in the third period with a power-play goal and threatened with a penalty shot that was unsuccessful.

The final Falcon goal of the game came on the power play from senior Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.) off tic-tac-toe passes from senior Rex Staudacher (Yorkville, Ill.) and Andrew Malek.

The Badgers scored the final two goals of the game, but that was not enough to steal the victory.

Junior Austin Bartell (New Berlin, Wis.) made some key saves and finished the game with 43 saves.

The Badgers held a 47-24 advantage in shots on Friday. Rocco Cicirello led the CUW attack with four shots.

The two teams finish the weekend series on Saturday morning in Madison.
