St. Norbert Sneaks Past Men’s Hockey

MEQUON, Wis. – Saturday night saw the CUW men's hockey team play in their second consecutive overtime game against the Green Knights of St. Norbert College.

Despite their efforts, CUW fell with a final score of 3-2, bringing their season record to 7-12-0, with a conference record of 4-6-0.

The Falcons took control in the first period, scoring with 2:29 left in the first period as freshman Alex Ochitwa (Prince George, B.C.) scored off the rebound on a shot that came from junior Seth Bergeron (Minneapolis, Minn.), who received the puck from freshman Matt Koepke (Vernon Hills, Ill.) to go up 1-0.

CUW would hold the Green Knights scoreless as sophomore goaltender Gabe Rosek (East Lansing, Mich) recorded 20 saves in the first period alone.

However, St. Norbert would tie up the contest at one apiece heading into the final period of play.

But the Falcons would mount a quick response out of the intermission, capitalizing on a powerplay opportunity as freshman Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ont.) slid the puck to sophomore Dain Sardelli (Hebron, N.D.), who found Noah Roitman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) in-line with goal. With the puck on his stick, he ripped a shot from distance, finding the back of the net to give CUW the 2-1 lead with 16:49 remaining.

However, with exactly six minutes remaining, the Green Knights responded with another goal to knot the score again at 2-2.

Despite efforts from both teams, the game remained deadlocked, forcing overtime for the second consecutive night.

In overtime, however, the Green Knights were the first to score in three-on-three to take the 3-2 victory. '

In the loss, Gabe Rosek recorded 60 saves. Offensively, Alex Ochitwa and senior Joey Petronack (White Bear Lake, Minn.) both recorded four shots. Ochitwa also led the Falcons in faceoffs won with 10 total, while freshman Sawyer Wirsing (Arundel, Maine) won eight.

The Falcons will remain at home next weekend when they host the Thunder of Trine for Mental Health Awareness Night on Jan. 26th at 7:00 p.m.
