Falcons Sweep Lake Forest For Border Battle Cup

MEQUON, Wis. – The Border Battle Cup is back home in Wisconsin. The Falcons brought out the brooms with a 4-2 victory over Lake Forest on Saturday night. The win sends CUW to 6-9-0 on the year and 4-4-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Falcons started the scoring with a goal from freshman Sawyer Wirsing (Arundel, Maine) with a shot from the right circle off an assist from sophomore Jaron Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska).

Three minutes later the Falcons struck on the power play when the one-timer from sophomore Dain Sardelli (Hebron, N.D.) snuck past the keeper off a cross-ice pass from freshman Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ont.) with sophomore Noah Roitman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) adding the secondary assist.

The Foresters second the first-period scoring with eight minutes left in the period.

Both defenses stood tall and did not allow a goal in the second period.

Sawyer Wirsing scored 31 seconds into the third period to start the scoring off a pass from Jaron Ketterman.

Concordia copied its first power play with its final goal of the game on the power play with a blast from Dain Sardelli off assists from Noah Roitman and Riley Klugerman.

The Foresters closed the scoring on a power-play goal in the final minute of the game but it was not enough.

Sophomore Gabe Rosek (East Lansing, Mich.) finished with 49 saves on the night.

The Foresters held a 51-28 advantage in shots on Saturday. Sawyer Wirsing and Dain Sardelli both had four shots for CUW.

On the power play, CUW finished 2-for-3 and the Foresters finished 2-for-10.

This is the third time the Falcons have claimed the Border Battle Cup in its nine years of existence. Joining the 2018 and 2020 teams. The 2018 team is the only other team to sweep the weekend series from the Foresters.

This is also the first-weekend series sweep for the Falcons since they swept Lawrence on Feb. 26-27, 2021.

The Falcons return to action next weekend against Dubuque.
