Falcons Pounce on the Pipers

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's hockey team started the 2023-24 campaign with a 4-2 victory on Friday night.

The Pipers struck first with a goal 7:12 into the contest.

Sophomore Preston Hazelton (Lake Orion, Mich.) scored his first collegiate goal at the 12:41 mark of the first period off an assist from freshman Matt Koepke (Vernon Hills, Ill.).

Two minutes later, sophomore Derek Humphreys (Spokane, Wash.) skated past his defender and scored off assists from sophomore Noah Roitman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and freshman Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ont.).

Humphreys struck again two minutes later with a shorthanded goal.

The Pipers scored the lone goal in the second period on the power play.

Junior Zach Brydges (Woodbury, Minn.) scored an empty net goal with three seconds remaining off a pass from freshman Alex Ochitwa (Prince George, B.C.).

Sophomore Gabe Rosek (East Lansing, Mich.) finished with 39 saves in the victory.

The Pipers held a 41-30 advantage in shots on Friday. Derek Humphreys led the flock with five shots.

The Falcons blocked 19 shots on Friday, with senior Joey Petronack (White Bear Lake, Minn.), sophomore Grant Newcomer (McFarland, Wis.) and freshman Logan Kroyman (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) all blocking three shots.

The Falcons look to bring out the brooms on Saturday afternoon.
