Sawyer Wirsing Snags NCHA Weekly Star Honor

MEQUON, Wis. – The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) released its weekly Three Stars of the Week for Men's Hockey on Tuesday morning. Sawyer Wirsing was voted as one of the three stars for the week.

A freshman forward from Arundel, Maine, Sawyer Wirsing is collecting the honor for the first time in his career.

Wirsing helped the Falcons sweep Lake Forest on the weekend and collect the Border Battle Cup for the third time in program history.

On Friday night, he assisted on the first goal of the game from freshman Logan Kroyman (Deerfield Beach, Fla.). He then scored the game-winning goal in overtime in the 7-6 victory.

He followed that up with a pair of goals in the 4-2 victory over the Foresters, including the game-winning goal 31 seconds into the third period.

Wirsing is the third Falcon to claim the honor. Freshman Alex Ochitwa (Prince George, B.C.) claimed the honor on Jan. 2 and sophomore Gabe Rosek (East Lansing, Mich.) did so on Nov. 28.

Tyler Blancard of Trine and Austin Schwab of MSOE were the two other stars. The forward led Trine to a 5-4 overtime victory over Adrian on Friday. The junior scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner at 2:59 in the extra period. The San Jose, California native scored his first goal of the upset win at 13:02 in the opening period. The goalkeeper made 33 saves during a 4-2 victory at UW-Stout. The Snohomish, Washington native had eight saves in the 1st period, 18 in the 2nd, and seven in the 3rd. It was his fifth win of the season.

Wirsing and the Falcons return to action on Friday against Dubuque.
