Men's Hockey Soars Past Lawrence

MEQUON, Wis. – CUW men's hockey emerged victorious in round two of their weekend series against the Vikings of Lawrence University, 4-1.

With the win, the Falcons improved to 3-3-0 and 2-2-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play.

The first period saw the Falcons establish a 1-0 lead behind the shorthanded goal of freshman Alex Ochitwa (Prince George, B.C.), who scored on the two-on-one break after receiving a pass from fellow freshman Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ont.) with 5:24 remaining.

CUW sophomore goaltender Gabe Rosek (East Lansing, Mich.) and the Falcons' defense kept the Vikings scoreless in the first, as Rosek registered 14 saves.

In the final minutes of the second period, with 3:26 remaining, junior Seth Bergeron (Minneapolis, Minn.) fed sophomore Mason Ausmus (Saline, Mich.) on an excellent lead pass to give Ausmus the puck with no defender in front of him. Mason Ausmus would capitalize on the scoring opportunity, ripping his shot past the Lawrence goaltender to give CUW the 2-0 lead heading into the final period.

CUW tacked on another goal to go up 3-0 just one minute and 58 seconds into the third period, this time on the power play, as Seth Bergeron found the back of the net with his one-timer. Assisting Bergeron was fellow junior Zach Brydges (Woodbury, Minn.).

Lawrence would cut the Blue and White's lead with a goal near the halfway point of the third period to make the score 3-1 in CUW's advantage.

But the Falcons would respond with 3:23 remaining in the game, as CUW capitalized on the Vikings' empty net as Mason Ausmus sent the puck into the back of the net from beyond center ice with assists from sophomores Derek Humphreys (Spokane, Wash.) and Collin Kerchoff (White Lake, Mich).

In the win, the sophomore goaltender Gabe Rosek recorded 31 saves.

The Falcons will compete once more before Thanksgiving as they head north to take on the Yellow Jackets of UW-Superior on Tuesday, Nov. 21st, at 7 p.m.
