Powerplays Push Falcons Past Foresters

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The CUW men's hockey team traveled to Lake Forest to complete the series against the Foresters and fight for the Border Battle Cup.

The Foresters struck first in the second minute of the first period.

The Falcons tied up the game on the first of two powerplay goals of the night. The first came in the fifth minute of the first period off the stick of senior Cory Denis (Madison, Wis.) with helpers from senior Salvatore Scalise (Calgary, Alta.) and sophomore Jordan Guiney (Victoria, B.C.).

This goal came off of a Lake Forest holding penalty at 4:40.

The second powerplay goal came off of an interference call in the 11th minute of the first period from Jordan Guiney. Cory Denis and junior Alex Way (Ottowa, Ont.) added assists.

Alex Way netted the winning goal for the Falcons in the 15th minute of the second period with an assist from the new captain, senior Bryce Fisk (Brown Deer, Wis.).

The Foresters attempted to mount a comeback in the ninth minute of the third period when they scored on the powerplay to cut the deficit to one.

Sophomore Liam McGarva held strong between the posts and denied the Foresters their shot at a comeback.

He recorded 47 saves in the outing.

In the fight for the Border Battle Cup, the game went into a shootout for the claim to the trophy.

The Falcons shot first but were unsuccessful. The Foresters were able to sneak their first shot past the tender to lead 1-0 in the shootout.

Neither team was able to hit another shot, and Lake Forest claimed the Border Battle Cup after the 1-0 shootout victory.

The Falcons look to carry this momentum into a pair of conference matchups with Aurora on Friday and Saturday.
