St. Scholastica Rallies to Sink CUW in Overtime

DULUTH, Minn. – The CUW men's hockey team opened the 2021-22 season on Friday night at St. Scholastica. The Saints rallied back with three third-period goals to force overtime and win 5-4 to open the season.

The Falcons started the season off with a strong first period where the Falcons scored two goals.

Sophomore Tyler Pang (Victoria, B.C.) scored the first goal of the season off a faceoff victory from freshman Colton Schell (Lampman, Sask.).

Sophomore Sean Hofstetter (Columbia, Ill.) put the puck away with a shot right in front of the CSS net, off passes from sophomore Spencer Milne (Edmonton, Alta.) and senior Thomas Dyball (Papillion, Neb.).

The Saints opened the second-period scoring with a goal just three minutes into the period.

Freshman Justin Schwartzmiller (Fond du Lac, Wis.) put the puck away on a two-on-one advantage for his first collegiate goal. Senior Cory Dennis (Madison, Wis.) added the assist on the goal

40 seconds later, Cory Dennis scored on a two-on-one advantage off a pass from junior Alex Way (Ottawa, Ont.) and Justin Schwartzmiller.

The Saints opened the scoring in the third period with a pair of goals 54 seconds apart to take a bite out of the Falcon lead.

St. Scholastica tied the game on the power play later in the third period.

The Saints scored 24 seconds into overtime to claim the victory.

Senior Bo Didur (West Vancouver, B.C.) collected 30 saves in the season opener.

The Saints held a 35-31 advantage in shots on Friday night. Sophomore Bryson Cecconi (Powell River, B.C.) led the flock with nine shots.

The Blue and White killed off three of the five penalties on Friday. CUW did not have a power-play opportunity against the Saints.

Alex Way won nine faceoffs against St. Scholastica.

The Falcons look to bounce back on Saturday at Wisconsin-Stout.
