Baseball drops non-conference home game against Carthage

MEQUON, Wis. – Carthage College scored five runs combined over the fifth and sixth innings to down the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team for a second straight night, this time 6-4 at Kapco Park.

The Falcons built a 4-0 lead after four innings Wednesday night but the Red Men answered with two in the fifth and three in the sixth to capture a one-run lead. Carthage then added insurance on a solo home run in the top of the eight for the 6-4 win.

Freshman Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) paced the Falcons offense as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI from the leadoff spot. Thomas roped a two-RBI double in the CUW three-run second and added an RBI single in the fourth inning. Sophomore Jacob Boudreaux (Wauwatosa, Wis.), who walked three times, scored on both of Thomas's hits, while senior Taylor Buuck (Hillsboro, Ore.) also scored on the double.

Buuck went 2-for-2 for the Falcons and reached base four times with a pair of walks as well. Junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.), who started the game on the mound, tripled for CUW as did freshman Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.). Sharon finished the contest with two hits.

Sharon was also the pitcher of record for CUW as he lasted 5.2 innings and gave up three earned runs. The Red Men would add two unearned on Sharon, who finished the game with three strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) pitched 2.1 innings and gave up his first earned run since April 12 in the process, while sophomore Tyler Gross (Wauwatosa, Wis.) tossed a perfect ninth for the Falcons.

Tim Sulik earned the win for the Red Men as he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four earned. Colin Dressen, who cleaned up Sulik's mess in the sixth inning, pitched 2.1 inning of relief and paved way for Sam Wilhelms to come on for his eighth save of the season.

Jake Erfourth, who homered in the eighth inning, paced the Carthage offense with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Brian Huntsinger added three hits for the Red Men, despite not starting the game. Huntsinger entered in the bottom of the first after an injury to the CC leadoff man.

The Falcons will return to conference play this weekend with a doubleheader at Lakeland College. First pitch is set for noon.
