Gross posts shutout, Baseball opens season with split against Gusties

TUCSON, Ariz. – Sophomore right-hander Tyler Gross delivered a four-hit shutout in game two of a doubleheader as the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team split its season-opening twinbill against Gustavus Adolphus College. The Falcons won game two 5-0 after falling 5-2 in the season opener.

Gross (Wauwatosa, Wis.) was outstanding in allowing four hits over the complete game effort. He struck out three and walked three in seven innings.

The Falcons offense gave the righty plenty of run support early, scoring twice in the first two innings. Junior Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) belted a two-run home run in the first inning, while freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) and junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) each recorded RBI singles in the second. Senior Taylor Buuck (Hillsboro, Ore.) added an RBI triple in the fourth for the 5-0 lead.

No Falcons players recorded two hits in the win but seven of nine starters did record a hit, including freshman Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) who scored a team-best two runs.

In the opening game Gustavus Adolphus (3-3) used a five-run fourth inning to defeat the Falcons. The Gusties had four players deliver RBI singles in the frame, including David Tranvik and Taylor Bigandt as each player tallied a game-best three hits.

Sharon provided two hits for the Falcons, including a double for theFalcons. Buuck and Hegeman eached tripled, while junior Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) and senior Jay Kuczynski (Cedarburg, Wis.) each had RBI singles.

Junior Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) took the loss in a complete game effort for CUW. The righty struck out two and scattered 11 hits in his first appearance of 2014. Grant Soderberg gained the win for GAC, striking out five in a complete game effort.
