Baseball winning streak hits seven with doubleheader sweep of Marian

MEQUON, Wis. – On April 12 the Concordia University Wisconsin dropped its fifth straight game before it was set to open a 10-game homestand. The homestand was just what the Falcons needed as they ran their winning streak to seven games Monday with a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference sweep of Marian University, winning by scores of 4-3 and 11-7 at Kapco Park.

In the opening game the Falcons scored the winning run on a wild pitch, allowing sophomore Jordan Mathiebe (Brillion, Wis.) to slide into home for the 4-3 win. Freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) earned the win by throwing 4.2 scoreless innings of relief, striking out two and allowing three hits.

Game two saw the Falcons pound out 16 hits, three coming from freshman Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) for the 11-7 win. Junior Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) drove in two runs in the opener and three in game two, finishing with five over the twinbill. It was senior Austin Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) who turned in the strong relief performance in the nightcap, pitching six innings, allowing three earned, for his second win of the season.

In the opener, Marian and CUW continued to answer one another, playing to a 3-3 tie after five innings of play. MU went up 1-0 in the first before CUW scored two in the bottom of the third, one coming on an RBI double from Seifert. MU would answer in the top of the fourth with a solo home run from Matt Bromley before again taking the lead, 3-2, in the fifth.

It was the Falcons turn to answer in the bottom of the fifth as Seifert delivered an RBI single, plating freshman Tyler Crass (Glendale, Wis.). Seifert tallied two of the Falcons five hits in the opener.

Game two saw CUW jump out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from Mathiebe and senior Taylor Buuck (Hillsboro, Ore.). Marian would come back with three in the third, including an RBI triple from Tyler Thompson.

The Falcons answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, two coming on an RBI double from junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.), who also served as the Falcons starting pitcher. Sharon doubled twice in the nightcap and was one of six Falcons to record at least two hits.

The Falcons would add a run in the fifth before putting the game away with three more in the seventh inning and two in the eighth. Seifert had a two-RBI single in the seventh inning, while sophomore Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.) and Crass added RBI singles in the eighth inning.

Joining Thomas and Sharon with at least two hits for CUW were Seifert, Crass, freshman Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) and Mathiebe. Mathiebe scored a game-best three runs as nine different Falcons recorded hits in the game.

CUW (13-14, 6-8 NACC) will look to continue its current winning streak on Wednesday by hosting Carroll University in a non-conference game. First pitch between the Falcons and Pioneers is set for 4:00 p.m.
