Baseball secures No. 3 seed in NACC Tournament with sweep of Lakeland

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Freshman Andrew Heideman and senior Austin Baglow turned in quality starts on the mound in helping the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Lakeland College Saturday at Muskie Field.

Heideman threw seven strong in the opening 8-4 win, allowing one earned and striking out six. Baglow then followed suit with a complete-game in a 2-1, game-two victory. He finished the game with four strikeouts and has now given the Falcons a complete game effort in each of his last two starts.

CUW also received timely hitting, especially in the opening win. The Falcons built a 4-0 lead after three innings, two of the runs coming on a two-RBI single from freshman Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) in the third.

Lakeland would cut the CUW advantage to 4-2 in the bottom of third and that score held until a four-run eighth inning put the Falcons on top 8-2. Junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) capped off the frame with a two-run single. The Muskies scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, making the final score 8-4.

Freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) pitched the final two innings for the Falcons in game two. He struck out one batter while allowing two earned.

In game two the Falcons once again jumped out to a lead as Sharon singled in freshman Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.), making the score 1-0 in the top of the first. The Falcons would make the score 2-0 in the top of the fifth on a double steal. With the runners on the corners, Thomas swiped second base, allowing freshman Tyler Crass (Glendale, Wis.) to steal home for the 2-0 lead.

LC (11-28, 3-17) scored its only run off of Baglow in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single from Jeremy Mikula. Lakeland finished game two with more hits than the Falcons (7-5) but Baglow limited the damage, allowing just one run to score.

CUW (20-16, 12-8 NACC) will close its regular season slate against UW-Whitewater in a non-conference doubleheader Monday at Kapco Park. The Falcons and Warhawks will begin at 1 p.m. The NACC Tournament will begin next Thursday with CUW taking on No. 4 Edgewood at 1 p.m.
