Baseball takes third straight with non-conference win over Elmhurst

MEQUON, Wis. – A three-run second inning and strong pitching from four Falcons helped the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team win its third straight game Wednesday, this one a 3-1 non-conference victory over Elmhurst College at Kapco Park.

Freshman Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) and junior Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) each recorded two-out RBI singles in the bottom of the second inning. On Seifert's single, the Bluejays threw behind Thomas, forcing a rundown but threw it off his helmet, allowing him to score a third run, unearned.

The duo of junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) and sophomore Tyler Gross (Wauwatosa, Wis.) had the Elmhurst hitters baffled through six innings. The Falcons occupied a pitching by committee approach, with Sharon and Gross each throwing three shutout innings. Sharon allowed one hit, with Gross giving up two as each player struck out one batter. Gross was credited with the win, his second in as many games.

Freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) earned the save by throwing the final two innings, allowing no hits. Gausman struck out two and got the Falcons out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning where he came one with nobody out, inheriting runners on second. The freshman got out of the jam by allowing just one run, which was not charged to him for his first career save. Junior Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) pitched the seventh and faced two batteres in the eighth. 

The Falcons offense collected nine hits, with two each coming from Thomas and sophomore Jordan Mathiebe (Brillion, Wis.). Thomas, freshman Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) and senior Taylor Buuck (Hillsboro, Ore.) scored the three runs, while senior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) had the game's only extra-base hit, a double in the seventh.

Brennan McClung took the loss for Elmhurst as the starter pitched five innings, allowing two earned. Three Bluejays relievers combined for three shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out three batters.

CUW (9-14) will look to continue its current winning ways on Saturday with a non-conference twinbill against the University of Chicago. The Falcons and Maroons will begin at 1 p.m. at Kapco Park and both games will be seven innings.
