Baseball winning streak snapped in non-conference setback at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team dropped its first game since April 12, falling 11-1 against Carthage College in non-conference action Tuesday night. The Falcons loss snaps a 12-game winning streak.

Carthage broke a 3-1 game open with a six-run sixth inning, building a 9-1 lead after six complete. The Red Men would go on to add two in the eighth, completing the victory via the ten-run rule.

Jeremy Salzman did a good job keeping the CUW bats in check as he threw a complete-game, striking out five batters. Salzman did not give up an earned run with the Falcons second-inning score coming unearned.

Sophomore Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.) drove in the only CUW run of the game, plating junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) and giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead after 1.5 inning of play. Freshman Isaac Tewes (Chaska, Minn.) recorded his first two collegiate hits to pace the Falcons offense, going 2-for-2 after entering the game in the fourth inning. Freshman Tyler Crass (Glendale, Wis.) added a double for the Falcons.

The Carthage bats were on full display Tuesday, compiling five extra-base hits, including a pair of roundtrippers. Reid Hero finished the contest with two hits and three RBI as he belted a two-run home run in the six-run sixth. Graham Wick, who went 3-for-4 with three driven in, also homered with a three-run shot in the second, giving the Red Men a 3-1 lead at the time.

Nick Schmidlkofer added three hits for CC, while Drew Bailey and Zach Wade added two as the Red Men tallied 15 hits in the game. Junior Michael Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) took the loss for CUW, pitching 5.1 innings. Winter was touched up for nine runs and finished the game with two strikeouts.

Junior Matthew Brueser (Oconomowoc, Wis.) pitched the remainder of the sixth inning and did not allow a run, while junior Colin Bernreuter (Frankenmuth, Mich.) finished the game on the bump for CUW.

These two teams will get together again tomorrow night, this time with the Falcons hosting at Kapco Park. First pitch is again set for 6 p.m.
