Winning streak reaches 12 as Baseball sweeps Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE – Freshman Matt Schubert delivered a game-winning hit in the top of the 14th inning in game one as the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team took its winning streak to 12 games with a sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College Sunday. The Falcons took the extra-innings game one, 8-7, before winning 9-3 in the nightcap in the NACC twinbill at Neumann Family Field.

After four scoreless extra innings the Falcons finally broke through in the top of the 14th as Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) singled to right center field, plating Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) Sophomore Tyler Gross (Wauwatosa, Wis.), who pitched six scoreless relief innings, finished the job in the bottom of the inning for his fifth win of the season. Junior Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) pitched six relief innings before Gross, allowing three earned.

The host Warriors nearly won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. WLC, who trailed 7-6 entering the frame, scored the tying run on a passed ball with one out, which also advanced a runner to third base. The ensuing batter flew out to right field and freshman Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) fired a strike to catcher Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) who applied to tag and allowed the Falcons to keep playing.

The 9-3 game-two win was all about senior right-hander Austin Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) as he did not allow an earned run in a complete-game effort. Baglow helped preserve a bullpen that pitched 12 innings in game one by swiftly working through the WLC batting order. He struck out four to improve his record to 3-2.

After WLC built a 3-1 lead in the opener, CUW came back with four runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 advantage. Seifert had an RBI single in the inning, while junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

The Warriors would regain the lead at 6-5 after the sixth, but CUW again answered with two in the seventh, one of those coming on an RBI single from sophomore Jacob Boudreaux (Wauwatosa, Wis.), to take a 7-6 lead. Boudreaux paced the Falcons offense with three hits in the opener

Sharon delivered three RBIs and tripled in the second game for the Falcons as they outhit the Warriors 14-5. Burgert collected four hits in the contest as he, junior Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) and senior Taylor Buuck (Hillsboro, Ore.) all recorded doubles. Sophomore Luke Scheuerlein finished game two with three hits, collecting five in the doubleheader.

One area the Falcons could have improved upon Sunday is team defense. CUW committed eight errors in the opening game as three of the WLC runs were unearned.

The 12-game winning streak has the Falcons at a season-best four games over .500. CUW is now 10-8 in league play and sits in third place in the conference standings.

CUW (18-14, 10-8 NACC) will look for its 13th straight win Monday in a non-conference game against Maranatha Baptist University. First pitch from Kapco Park is set for 4:30 p.m.
