Baseball routs Middlebury on final day of Arizona trip
TUCSON, Ariz. – Three separate four-run innings helped the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team end its spring trip on a high note with a 14-3 win over Middlebury College Wednesday.
The Falcons scored three times in the first, fifth and sixth innings and added a pair of runs in the second for their most productive offensive game of the trip. Four CUW players finished with multiple hits, led by sophomore Jordan Mathiebe (Brillion, Wis.) who tallied a career-best three.
The offense was plenty of support for a foursome of Falcons pitchers who combined to get the 21 outs. Freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) picked up his first career win, pitching the fourth and fifth innings and allowing just one hit. Junior Michael Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) started the game, throwing three innings and striking out four.
Junior Matthew Brueser (Oconomowoc, Wis.) and senior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for CUW. The appearance on the mound was the first for Burgert as a Falcon.
CUW (4-3) jumped on Middlebury with a four-run first inning, all four runs being unearned. The Falcons then added two in the first, one coming on an RBI single from junior Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.). They would break the game open in the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman Tyler Crass (Glendale, Wis.) roped a two-RBI double in his only at bat.
Finishing with two hits for the Falcons were Seifert, Burgert and senior Jay Kuczynski (Cedarburg, Wis.). Kuczynski recorded an RBI single in each of his two at bats, while junior Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) added two RBIs.
The Falcons will begin conference play Saturday by visiting No. 10 Concordia University Chicago Saturday. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
