Schubert's walk off, strong pitching guides Baseball to NACC sweep of MSOE

MEQUON, Wis. – Freshman Andrew Heideman and senior Austin Baglow turned in outstanding starts on the mound to lead the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team to a much-needed Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference sweep of MSOE. The Falcons won the opener, 5-1, before completing the sweep with a walk-off, 3-2, game two win.

Freshman Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth in game two. Schubert came to the plate with bases full of Falcons and one out and sent the first pitch he saw into leftfield, plating junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) for the one-run win.

In the opener it was Heideman (Bakersfield, Calif.) who delivered a four-hit complete game effort on the mound, picking up his third win of the season. Heideman fanned a career-high eight batters in the win. Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) turned in an equally impressive performance in game two, throwing seven innings and allowing no earned runs. Baglow did not factor into the decision as sophomore Tyler Gross (Wauwatosa, Wis.) earned the win, throwing two innings of relief.

Senior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) recorded an extra-base hit in each game, including belting a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth of game two, which gave CUW a 2-0 lead at the time. MSOE would fight back with a run each in the seventh and eighth, forcing a 2-2 tie before Schubert won it in the Falcons final at bat.

In the opener CUW and MSOE were tied at 1-1 before freshman Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth. CUW would add runs in the seventh and eighth innings on RBIs from Burgert and sophomore Jacob Boudreaux (Wauwatosa, Wis.) for the 5-1 win.

The Falcons took advantage of three MSOE errors in game one as four of their five runs were unearned. Adam Vlaj turned in a quality start for the Raiders, allowing one earned over seven innings but took the loss in giving up three additional unearned runs.

Sophomore Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.) had his best offensive performance of the season Sunday, collecting three hits in the two games, including a pair of doubles. Schubert added an RBI squeeze bunt in game two, finishing with two RBIs on the day. Sharon recorded a pair of hits in the opener as he and Scheuerlein each scored three runs for the day.

CUW (8-14, 4-8 NACC) will return to action Tuesday as they host Maranatha Baptist Bible College in a non-conference game at Kapco Park. The game against the Crusaders continues an 11-game home stretch for the Falcons. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 4 p.m.
