Adams, Winter pitch Baseball to doubleheader sweep of Chicago

MEQUON, Wis. – Junior Michael Winter was two outs away from a no-hitter as the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team swept the University of Chicago by identical 5-0 scores Saturday at Kapco Park. The wins helped CUW push its winning streak to five games.

Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) was masterful in game two as he allowed just three baserunners to reach in the 75-pitch effort. His no-hit bid was broken up by Brett Huff in the top of the seventh on a single up the middle. Winter struck out five for his first win of the season.

It was junior Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) who started the theme of a strong pitching day for the Falcons as he threw six shutout innings in the opener. Adams was efficient in throwing just 61 pitches as the CUW staff was working ahead all afternoon. Freshman Andrew Heideman (Bakersfield, Calif.) came on to record the final three outs of game one, two of those coming via strikeouts.

Sophomore Jordan Mathiebe (Brillion, Wis.) finished the day with three RBIs, including a two-RBI double in the sixth inning of game one. That was where the Falcons opened things up in the opener as they led 1-0 heading into the sixth, but scored four insurance runs as freshman Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) and sophomore Jacob Boudreaux (Wauwatosa, Wis.) added RBIs.

In game two CUW jumped on the Maroons early with three runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) got the scoring started with an RBI double, scoring junior Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.). Senior Jay Kuczynski (Cedarburg, Wis.) then gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead with an RBI groundout, while Sharon scored the third run on a passed ball. The Falcons would add a run in the second and another in the sixth on an RBI single from Mathiebe.

The Falcons defense was strong in both games, committing just one error. Combine that with strong pitching and the CUW sweep was completed in just three hours and 14 minutes.

CUW finished the day with three extra-base hits, doubles coming from Mathiebe in game one and Sharon and senior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) in game two. The Falcons totaled 14 hits in the twinbill, while Chicago was limited to just five over 14 innings of play.

CUW (11-14) will try and continue its winning ways on Monday in a NACC doubleheader against Marian University. First pitch from Kapco Park is set for 1 p.m.
