Baglow's complete game helps Baseball salvage split against Williams

TUCSON, Ariz. – For the third straight time on the Arizona spring trip the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team dropped its first game. The Falcons continued its theme of rebounding from a loss with a strong pitching performance as senior Austin Baglow helped his team salvage a split against Williams Tuesday. The Falcons dropped the opener 13-11 before gaining a 4-3 game two win.

Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) was impressive on the mound as he allowed zero earned runs in the complete game effort. The senior had just one punch out but showed pinpoint control issuing just one walk all while allowing four hits to pick up his first win of the season. Williams had the tying run on third but Baglow got the final batter to fly out to left for the victory.

The Falcons offense gave Baglow just enough run support, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) in the third inning. Sharon's hit plated senior Taylor Buuck (Hillsboro, Ore.) and freshman Tyler Crass (Glendale, Wis.). Crass finished the game with two hits, including a triple.

CUW got on the board in the top of the first in game two when junior Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) drove in Sharon with an RBI single. Following the two-run third, CUW made the score 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI walk from junior Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.), plating sophomore Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.).

Williams (3-2) would make things interesting in the bottom of the fourth when they scored three unearned runs. Jack Cloud capped off the frame with an RBI triple but that would be all the offense the rest of the way as Baglow held off the Ephs bats over the final three innings.

The opening game was a wild affair that saw the Falcons rally back after falling down 11-1 after two-and-a-half innings of play. CUW would answer with four in the bottom of the third and five in in the fourth, cutting the Ephs lead to one. The Falcons trailed 13-10 heading into the seventh and cut the lead to two, loading the bases in the process but Williams escaped for a game one win.

Seniors Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) and Jay Kuczynski (Cedarburg, Wis.) paced the Falcons offense in the opener, combining for five RBIs and six hits. Burgert went 3-for-4 and drove in three, while Kuczynski was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Crass added three hits, finishing with a triple in each game of the twinbill.

CUW was closing in on tying the game in the fifth inning as the tying run was headed home after a passed ball with two outs. The Ephs recovered and recorded the final out at the plate on a bang-bang call, taking a one-run lead into the final two innings.

Freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) made a strong debut on the mound in relief for the Falcons. Gausman entered play in sixth inning and threw 1.2 innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out two.

CUW (3-3) will conclude its Arizona trip tomorrow with a single game against Middlebury. The Falcons and Panthers are set for an 11 a.m. CST first pitch.
