Baseball caps off perfect homestand with NACC sweep of Edgewood
MEQUON, Wis. – On April 13, a day the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team was set to begin a 10-game homestand, the Falcons had a 6-14 overall record. Flash forward to Saturday and the Falcons are now 16-14 after sweeping Edgewood College to conclude the home stretch with a 10-0 record. CUW won game one 8-1 before taking the second contest, 9-1.
A pair of freshmen, Andrew Heideman and Dylan Gausman, turned in quality starts on Saturday, keeping up with the theme of quality pitching during the winning streak. Heideman (Bakersfield, Calif.) delivered a complete-game gem in the opener, allowing five hits and striking out four. Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) then posted seven innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out five.
During the 10-game winning streak the Falcons have given up just a total 16 runs in 86 innings of play. Saturday's games marked the seventh and eighth time during the stretch that CUW has limited its opponent to two runs or less.
The Falcons bats also turned up in the sweep with 25 hits in the two games. In the opener, CUW built a 5-0 lead after two innings, including scoring four in the second. Sophomore Jacob Boudreaux (Wauwatosa, Wis.), freshman Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) and senior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) all had RBI hits in the inning, Burgert capping off the frame with a double.
Burgert recorded a pair of two-baggers in the game one win, while junior Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) tallied a game-best three hits. Boudreaux added a pair of hits and two RBIs from the eight spot. Thomas also added two hits, while junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) drove in two from the four spot in the batting order.
Game one also saw the Falcons flash some leather as they did not commit an error, working well behind Heideman. The play of the game came in the top of the second inning when sophomore Luke Scheuerlein (Thiensville, Wis.) ran one down in foul territory while leaping over the bullpen fence.
In game two the Falcons broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with five runs. Boudreaux started the party with a two-RBI double down the leftfield line, scoring freshmen Tyler Crass (Glendale, Wis.) and Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.). Seifert would add one of his game-high three RBIs in the inning, while Burgert drove in Seifert on a sacrifice fly.
Burgert finished game two with three hits, while Boudreaux added two hits, scoring twice and driving in two. Thomas added three hits from the top of the lineup and scored twice. Schubert also touched home twice as the Falcons had a balanced offensive attack in each game.
Junior Matthew Brueser (Oconomowoc, Wis.) pitched the final two innings in the second game, not allowing a runner.
CUW (16-14, 8-8 NACC) will look to continue its hot streak when they hit the road for the first time since April 12. The Falcons will visit Wisconsin Lutheran College tomorrow for a NACC twinbill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
