Falcons Fall in Overtime Thriller

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW ACHA hockey team began a three-game road trip out to St. Louis on Friday when they took on the Maryville Saints.

The first period saw a 0-0 score with junior Mack Willy (Tacoma, Wash.) recording 13 saves in the period.

Maryville scored first with two goals netted in the second period at eight minutes as well as 15 minutes.

The Falcons cut the deficit to one with an 18-minute goal from freshman Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.) with assists from sophomore Nick Roberts (Milwaukee, Wis.) as well as junior Scott Gregor (Ashland, Wis.).

The Falcons tied it up in the 14th minute of the third period off the stick of Scott Gregor on a slashing penalty to the Saints.

The Saints took the lead back with three minutes left to go.

The Falcons didn't let the Saints take the cake in regulation when they scored a goal with 52 seconds left in the third period with an empty net. Garrett Wilderman netted his second goal of the night to even up the score on the power-play yet again.

With the game going into overtime, the Falcons fought hard with a shot by senior Wyatt Wilderman (Bear Dance, Mont.) but fell with two minutes left in the extra period off of a goal from the Saints.

Willy ended the night with 44 saves and Wilderman led the flock with two total points.

The Falcons look to avenge this overtime defeat Saturday when they take on the Saints for the second time in this doubleheader.
