Falcons Tie UWEC in Weekend Opener

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons and the Blugolds opened the weekend with a 4-4 tie to send the Falcons to 2-0-1 on the young season.

Wisconsin – Eau Claire opened the scoring in the first frame on Friday night.

Freshman Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.) scored on the power play with assists to senior Wyatt Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.) and junior Scott Gregor (Ashland, Wis.)

Blugolds took the lead back 21 seconds later

UWEC extended the lead with a goal to start the second period.

Garrett Wilderman found the back of the net again halfway through the second period off a pass from Scott Gregor off a turnover.

The Falcons leveled the game on the power play off the stick of Scott Gregor

Sophomore John Swiatek (Rochester, N.Y.) deflected the puck into the net on the power play late in the third period off a shot. The Wilderman brothers added the assists.

The visitors tied the game up, but the CUW defense stood tall and collected some key saves from junior Mack Willy (Tacoma, Wash.) killing off a five-on-three advantage for the Blugolds in the final two minutes of regulation.

The two teams will go at it again on Saturday afternoon.
