FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The CUW ACHA hockey team traveled to Marian to take on the Sabres in the first conference matchup of the season.
The Sabres struck first, but let up three unanswered in the first period to go down 3-1 by the first intermission.
The Falcons goals came from sophomore Nick Roberts (Milwaukee, Wis.), freshman Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.) on a power play, and junior Trenton Sherman (Farmington, Minn.). On top of the three Falcon goal scorers, four other Falcons tallied assists in the first period. Freshman Tommy Cassel (Grafton, Wis.) assisted the first goal from Roberts, Garrett Wilderman was assisted by his brother senior Wyatt Wilderman (Bear Dance, Mont.) and sophomore John Swiatek (Rochester, N.Y.), and Sherman scored off of the stick of junior Liam Butler (Oak Lawn, Ill.).
The second period saw all Sabre scoring with two goals late in the second period to tie it up at three.
The Sabres scored the go-ahead goal in the fourth minute of the third period.
The Falcons came back and tied it up with a goal from Cassel and an assist by Sherman.
The Sabres would tie it at five with one-minute left in the game and would look to force an overtime. The Marian offense pushed hard and snuck one past junior Mack Willy (Tacoma, Wash.) with 28 seconds left in the game.
The Falcons return to the Ozaukee Ice arena to take on the Sabres in another conference matchup Saturday night.
