Volleyball serves up victory at Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – Concordia Wisconsin took the final two sets against Texas Lutheran on Thursday night for a 3-1 (25-11, 17-25, 25-14, 25-21) non-conference victory to begin the 2016 season. The Falcons had 17 service aces in an all-around balanced attack that saw nine players record a kill and six players record a block.

HOW IT HAPPENEND
- The Falcons cruised in the opening frame behind a commanding 15-1 scoring run to overcome an early 6-2 deficit. The offensive outburst propelled the visitors to an easy 25-11 first set victory. CUW had an eye-popping eight service aces, with three coming from sophomore Ashley Jehlicka (Salem, Wis.).
- Texas Lutheran responded to even the match at 1-1 after taking the second set 25-17. The hosts charged out to a 12-3 lead and never looked back. CUW got to within three points, 19-16, but it was too late.
- Another massive scoring run saw the Falcons score 19-of-22 points to run away with the third stanza and go ahead 2-1 in the non-conference tilt. It helped that the Bulldogs struggled on offense, hitting -.103, while CUW hit .143 at the net.
- The fourth set was back-and-forth, but a late 8-0 run by the Falcons gave them the momentum they needed to earn the victory. CUW forced Texas Lutheran into the negative hitting percentage for the third set of the match and flexed its muscle, as seven players recorded at least a kill in the frame.
- Junior Lauren Nevinski (New Berlin, Wis.) led the way with seven kills; while sophomore Amanda Schultz (North Prairie, Wis.), junior Kaily Moegenburg (Plymouth, Wis.), junior Terese Zymanek (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and freshman Megan Mayer (Downers Grove, Ill.) each had six kills each.
- The setting duo of senior Karina Klotz (Hubertus, Wis.) and Jehlicka combined for 31 assists.
- Mayer tied a program record with six service aces, while Jehlicka added a career-high four service aces in her return from a season off because of an injury.
- Sophomore Lindsey Casper (Hubertus, Wis.) led the defensive efforts with 19 digs, while Moegenburg had 12 digs. Nevinski finished with six solo blocks and a block assist.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- CUW served 17 aces, which is the second most in a match in program history. As well, its 20 block assists is tied for the seventh most in a match.
- Mayer's six service aces is the most in program history for a four-set match.

THE OPPOSITION
- Mackenzie Zamarripa and Kristin Fording led the Bulldogs with seven kills apiece, while Kaci Pecht added 14 assists.
- Defensively, Fording and Mathis Popelsky had 17 and 16 digs, respectively. Carlie Childres had a block assist and three block solos.

NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE
- The Falcons travel to Concordia Texas to play in the Concordia Invitational Tournament. They will battle the hosts, Concordia Texas, while also competing against Concordia Ann Arbor.
