Women's Lacrosse falls in MWLC Tournament triple overtime thriller

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – It was an instant classic between Concordia University Wisconsin and Carthage College on Friday evening at Thornson-Lucken Field. The Falcons record-breaking season came to a dramatic end with a 15-14 triple overtime loss to the Lady Reds in the semifinal contest.

Jenna Brown scored her only free-position goal with six seconds to play in regulation, which forced the first of three overtimes. The Falcons and Lady Reds traded goals in the first three-minute extra period, went scoreless in the second session, before Mackenzie Day recorded the game-winner.

CUW (12-5) trailed by as many as six goals in the first half before going on a 7-1 scoring run over a 19 minutes and 46 second span to tie the game, 9-9, with 25 minutes to play. CC scored three unanswered prior to the Falcons scoring four of the last five goals in regulation.

Statistics were even in every category, except for the Falcons winning 20-of-32 draw control attempts. The Lady Reds held a slight 5-2 edge in free-position goals.

Junior Sammi Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.) led all players with five goals and an assist. Senior Aly Pinkos (South Milwaukee, Wis.), Brown (junior, Roseville, Minn.) and junior Hayley Peppers (Franktown, Colo.) each scored twice for the Falcons. Pinkos led the team with a pair of assists.

Peppers also had four ground balls and nine draw controls. Sophomore Sabrina Boehlke (Random Lake, Wis.) led all players with three caused turnovers and freshman Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) made 13 saves in goal.

Sydney Whitaker tallied four goals for the Lady Reds (11-6) and five other players finished with two goals. Elizabeth Wittenborg and Lauren Chatham each had a pair of assists. Sohayla Horani caused four turnovers and Ali Gorman made 15 saves in goal and picked up six ground balls.

The Falcons set 15 team single season program records, while 13 individual single season records were also set. CUW ended the year with a program record 12 victories, eight win in MWLC play and eight home victories. For a complete look at all the records set throughout the season, click here.
