SUNY Potsdam gives Women's Lacrosse first setback of season

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – SUNY Potsdam scored seven of the games last eight goals to down Concordia University Wisconsin, 16-11, in non-conference action on Tuesday at Lake Lytal Park during the Spring Fling Tournament.

The Falcons scored three-consecutive goals to start the second half and took a 10-9 lead with 24 minutes and 50 seconds to play. The Bears answered with five-straight goals, including back-to-back by Michaela Cole, to retake the lead, 14-10.

Junior Sammi Reiter found the back of the net for CUW on a free-position attempt to cut the deficit to three goals with just over six minutes to play. SUNYP answered with two more scores over the final four minutes to negate any chance of a comeback.

The Falcons high-octane offense was stifled and could muster only 17 shots on goal, while the Bears took 30 at freshman goalkeeper Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.). CUW cleared 18-of-24 attempts, but lost the draw control battle, 19-10. Each team finished with two free-position goals.

Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.) scored a game-high five goals, assisted on a marker, picked up two ground balls, won two draw controls and caused two turnovers. Junior Hayley Peppers (Franktown, Colo.) recorded a hat trick and had team-highs in ground balls (five), draw control wins (five) and caused turnovers (three). Junior Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.) also found the back of the net twice.

Metanova recorded a career-high 14 saves in goal, while her counterpart Devan Olschewske made six saves for the Bears.

Michaela Cole lead SUNYP with four goals, while Bri McClusky had three goals and an assist. Margaret Wall ended with two goals and two assists, to go along with three caused turnovers. Bailey Weigel won a game-high nine draw controls.

CUW (4-1) returns to action on Wednesday for a contest against West Palm Beach Atlantic University, which is a NCAA Division III club team.
