Third period surge sends UW-Eau Claire past Women's Hockey

EAU CLAIRE, Wis.- The Concordia University Wisconsin women's hockey team fell victim to two goals in a 17-second span that proved to be the difference in its 2-0 defeat against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 2-0, Friday night at Hobbs Ice Center.

The first two periods of action Friday night saw a defensive battle as the score remained 0-0 after 40 minutes of play. Sophomore goaltender Kaitlyn Evans (Fairbanks, Alaska) was impressive in net during that span as she made 27 saves in the first two periods to help keep the game scoreless. The Falcons attempted 21 shots during those two periods but were unable to get anything past UW-EC goalie Mara Stormer.

It was the 8:41 mark of the third and final period that saw the game's first goal when Hadley Cookson scored for the Blugolds. Dani Kerr then scored for EUW-EC 17 seconds later, giving the Blugolds a 2-0 advantage.

The 2-0 lead would hold until the end of the game as UW-EC (9-11-4, 8-8-3 NCHA) came away with the victory. CUW was outshot 37-31 as Evans finished the game with 35 saves. Stormer (3-3-1) tallied 31 saves as she recorded the shutout.

CUW (4-17-3, 4-13-2 NCHA) will conclude its 2012-2013 season this afternoon when they take on the Blugolds once again. The puck is set to drop at 2 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire, Wis.
