Women's Hockey wins overtime thriller at Marian

FOND dU LAC, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin was firing from every angle on Friday evening at Marian University, but needed an overtime goal with eight seconds to play for a 2-1 victory in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play inside the Blue Line Family Ice Center.

The Falcons ended with an impressive 63-15 shots on goal advantage – a season-high and tied for sixth best in NCHA history – but had trouble finding the back of the net. MU (3-10-2, 2-6-2 NCHA) goalkeeper Amanda Alexander in turn had a career night with 61 saves, which is second most in league history.

Both teams traded goals in the opening 14:48 of the first frame before the scoreboard went silent over the next two periods and nearly the entire overtime period. Freshman Michelle Musil (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored the most important goal of her career to date, with an even-strength goal with eight seconds left in the contest. Sophomore Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.) was credited with an assist on the game-winner.

Kristin Skubic began the scoring halfway through the first period to give MU a 1-0 advantage until junior Maxine Blohowiak (Green Bay, Wis.) evened the game at 1-1 with an even-strength marker of her own. Musil earned her fourth assist of the season on the play.

The Falcons (3-11-3, 3-7-2 NCHA) shots on goal breakdown were impressive as they had 19 in the first, 26 in the second and 17 in the third. More importantly, the only shot on goal in the overtime period was the most significant for CUW.

MU will travel to Mequon, Wis., on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup to conclude the NCHA series inside the Ozaukee Ice Center.
