Women's Hockey sweeps Finlandia on the road

HANCOCK, Mich. – Concordia University Wisconsin blasted four goals into the back of the net in the opening period en route to a commanding 5-0 victory over Finlandia University in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play at Houghton County Arena.

The Falcons scored all four goals in the first period on Saturday afternoon less than four and a half minutes apart before going on cruise control. CUW outshot FU 39-12 in the win and 88-20 in the league sweep.

CUW (2-7-2, 2-5-2 NCHA) scored a short-handed and power-play goal, along with three even-strength tallies as five different Falcons found the back of the net.

Sophomore Erin Grant (Allen Park, MIch.) began the scoring barrage in the first with a tally, which was assisted by freshman Alexis Machuga (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and sophomore Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.). Junior Samantha Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.) smashed home a goal one minute and 16 seconds later to give the Falcons a 2-0 advantage. Junior Maxine Blowhowiak (Green Bay, Wis.) and sophomore Elizabeth Otto (Stillwater, Minn.) assisted on the marker.

CUW capitalized on an FU (0-8-0, 0-8-0 NCHA) power-play opportunity when it scored a short-handed goal – its first of the season – when freshman Chelsea Regan (Oakdale, Minn.) scored. Freshman Katherine Pauletti (Roseville, Minn.) and freshman Jenna Brown (Roseville, Wis.) assisted on the goal.

Heckendorf ended the scoring run with an even-strength tally after Grant and senior Sara Cole (Plymouth, Wis.) passed her the puck.

Pauletti put the final goal of the contest in net during the second period for CUW's fifth and final goal. Regan and Cole assisted on the score.

Sophomores Jennifer DeGeorge (Waukesha, Wis.) and Hannah Redden (Libertyville, Ill.) played for the first time this season between the pipes. DeGeorge recorded seven saves in 40 minutes, while Redden made five saves in the third period.

CUW returns to its home ice on Friday and Saturday for a two-game NCHA series against No. 6 UW-River Falls. Friday's contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center.
