St. Mary's tallies three third period goals to pull away from Women's Hockey

MEQUON, Wis. – St. Mary's University scored a pair of short-handed, empty net goals late in the third period to win a non-conference game, 4-1, over Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

The Cardinals committed a charging penalty with 2:31 to play in the game, which allowed the Falcons to pull their goalie and play with a two-skater advantage. SMU (1-1) was able to slow the CUW (0-2) offensive attack and fire the puck down the ice for a pair of rare goals.

SMU was on the attack to start the contest and finished with a 16-3 shot advantage after the opening period. However, CUW's Kaitlyn Evans (sophomore, Fairbanks, Alaska) saved each attempt and ended the game with 28 saves.

Freshman Olivia Vogel (Andover, Minn.) scored for the second-consecutive game with a power-play goal just over three minutes into the third period to knot the scoreboard at 1-1. Freshman Michelle Musil (Maple Grove, Minn.) and freshman Chelsea Regan (Oakdale, Minn.) assisted on the Falcons lone score.

SMU answered when McKenna Parent found the back of the net after her shot slipped through the middle of the Falcons' goalie to put the Cardinals ahead 2-1. Haley Coolsaet and Mackenzie Klimek assisted on the game-winning score.

Breanna Peterson and Coolsaet each scored one of the Cardinals two short-handed, empty net goals in the third period.

CUW returns to action on Friday, Nov. 2, when it begins Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play at the College of St. Scholastica. Action begins at 7 p.m., followed by a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m.
