No. 8 Concordia Moorhead scores early to defeat Women's Hockey

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia-Moorhead scored a pair of goals in the opening period and held on for a 3-1 non-conference, season-opening victory over Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday night at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

The shots were relatively even all night (33-32 in favor of CCM), but one difference in this defensive battle was the Cobbers lone power-play success. On that occasion Breann Julius found the back of the net after a CUW (0-1) hooking penalty to push their advantage to 2-0 with less than a minute to play in the first period.

The Falcons responded in the third frame when freshman Olivia Vogel (Andover, Minn.) tallied her first career goal after slapping a shot over the shoulder of CCM's goalie to cut the deficit to 2-1. CUW's only goal was assisted by freshman Michelle Musil (Maple Grove, Minn.) and freshman Jayda Hoerres (Melrose, Wis.).

Less than eight minutes later, Abby Taffe connected on a Lauren Riley and Jenna Westerham passing combination to give the Cobbers the 3-1 lead that became the final.

Concordia sophomore Andrea Mizanskey (Palos Heights, Ill.) tallied 30 saves on the night, while Rebecca Hendrickson was outstanding in the nets, saving 31 shots for CCM.

CUW returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the OIC against St. Mary's University.
