Men's Lacrosse sets season wins record

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin put the game out of reach early and eventually earned a 23-5 victory over Fontbonne University on Saturday afternoon at Fitting Field.

The victory gave the Falcons their 10th, which sets a program record for wins in a season.

The Midwest Lacrosse Conference game was delayed nearly an hour as severe weather rolled through the area prior to the Falcons lighting up the scoreboard. CUW piled on seven goals in each of the first two quarters and six more in the third before surrendering its first goal.

CUW played all 34 players who were active and had 15 players record at least a point. They finished with a commanding 47-25 advantage in ground balls, cleared 28-of-31 attempts, forced 26 turnovers of which 15 were forced and won 18-of-29 faceoffs.

CUW also outshot FU 52-26, including 36-11 on goal. In all, 21 players picked up one or more ground balls and 10 players caused at least one turnover. They also finished with 18 assists, which ties the program record.

Juniors David Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Shawn Teixeira (Calgary, Alberta) each had a career-high five points. Mueller found the back of the net four times, while Teixeira registered four helpers. Senior Danny Dahms (Calgary, Alberta) ended with a career-best five assists.

Tallying his first career marker was sophomore Zachary Doll (Kirkwood, Mo.) who rifled a shot into the net with eight minutes and 26 minutes to play before the final horn. He also picked up a career-high five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Freshman Samuel Allaire (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) played well defensively and picked up a career-high three ground balls.

Juniors Matt Larsen (Gurnee, Ill.) and Derek Brueske (Hopkins, Minn.) scored the Falcons man-up markers in the second and third quarters, respectively.

Of the 23 goals scored by the Falcons, they won the faceoff on 15 of those possessions.

Brendan Friss led the Griffins (2-11, 1-6 MLC) with two goals, while three others scored. Goalkeeper Thomas Carroll led the team with nine ground balls, while making 13 saves. Bradley Soble caused a game-high four turnovers.

CUW (10-3, 5-1 MLC) continues its three-game homestand on Wednesday against Elmhurst College in a MLC matchup at 4 p.m. at Fitting Field.
