John Carroll scores late to down Men's Lacrosse in season opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – John Carroll University scored a pair of goals in the final 99 seconds to down Concordia University Wisconsin, 9-7, in the season opener for both teams at Don Shula Stadium.

Both teams went back and forth, as there were four lead changes and three scoring ties. Statistics were also even, but featured the Falcons going 2-of-4 on extra-man opportunities.

The Blue Streaks opened with a three-goal lead before the Falcons answered with three tallies of their own. JCU and CUW again answered each other with a pair of goals twice to knot the scoreboard at 7-7 with 13 minutes to play in the game.

JCU's (1-0) Keegan Flinter and Michael Roth scored a minute apart to put the game out of reach for CUW.

Senior Danny Dahms (Calgary, Alberta) returned from a knee injury last season to lead CUW (0-1) with four goals, including both of the team's extra-man scores. Junior Matt Larsen (Gurnee, Ill.), junior Derek Brueske (Hopkins, Minn.) and senior Justin Krause (Hartland, Wis.) also scored. Sophomore Tyson Roe (Duncan, British Columbia) finished with a pair of assists.

Krause led the Falcons with three caused turnovers, while junior Christopher Grenz (Centennial, Colo.) had a team-high five ground balls. CUW held a 11-8 advantage in caused turnovers.

Gary Anile and Declan O'Grady paced the Blue Streaks with three goals each, while Roth had two scores. Jack MacLean had a game-high seven ground balls and Tommy Adolft caused three turnovers.

Senior Zack Davis (LaPorte, Ind.) recorded 11 saves for the Falcons and his counterpart Brian Bedell made 12 stops.

The game was the start of head coach Michael Fahey's coaching tenure at CUW, while it was the start of JCU's program.

CUW returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Olivet College.
