Albion scores five man-up goals to defeat Men's Lacrosse

MEQUON, Wis. – Albion College tallied five man-up goals to take advantage of numerous Concordia University Wisconsin penalties on Saturday to earn a 13-6 non-conference victory at Fitting Field.

The Britons trailed 3-1 after the opening quarter before going on a 12-3 scoring run over the next 45 minutes of play. AC had three-consecutive man-up goals in the second quarter, to go along with an extra-man tally in the third and fourth periods.

CUW (1-2) was whistled for 13 penalties for 11 minutes and 30 seconds, which included seven minute penalties and a two-minute unnecessary roughness call late in the final quarter.

Junior Derek Brueske (Hopkins, Minn.) tallied his third goal of the game with 2:52 to play before halftime, which cut the Falcons deficit to 5-4. However, CUW's offense was hampered and its defense put to the test in the second half because of the penalties.

Brueske led all scorers with four goals on 12 shots. Senior Justin Krause (Hartland, Wis.) and freshman Colin Raley (Inverness, Ill.) each had a score, while four players each picked up five ground balls. Junior Christopher Grenz (Centennial, Colo.) and freshman Benjamin Smith (Round Lake Beach, Ill.) each had a team-high two caused turnovers.

Junior Emmet O'Malley (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) finished with a career-best 15 saves between the pipes for the Falcons.

Joel Hedemark paced the Britons (5-1) with three scores, while Kyle O'Grady and Tim Urso each found the back of the net twice. Urso ended with a game-best three assists and three of his teammates recorded two assists each. Cameron Clements and Kyle Formanczyk each had a game-high seven ground balls. O'Grady caused four turnovers.

The Britons have now beaten the top four teams from the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll over the month.

CUW returns to action on Saturday, March 15 for its first MLC game of the season at Augustana College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
