Men's Lacrosse announces captains for 2014 season

MEQUON, Wis. -- Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Lacrosse head coach Michael Fahey named seniors, Danny Dahms, Justin Krause, Kyle Burrell, Sam Wladyka and junior Christopher Grenz as team captains for the 2014 season.

"We will rely on the leadership from our five captains to help lead our program in the right direction and take the next step in our fourth year as a program," Fahey said. "All five of these young men bring great characteristics to the program, on and off the field, and are a great representation of Concordia University Wisconsin."

Krause (Hartland, Wis.) was named to the All-Midwest Lacrosse Conference Second Team for his efforts on the field last year. He finished second on the team with 40 points (21 goals, 19 assists), third in ground balls (48) and fourth in caused turnovers (12). Krause finished eight games with three of more points and had seven multi-game goals. He also ranks first in program history for assists (46), ground balls (183) and caused turnovers (42).

"Justin works his tail off every time he steps on the field and is an all-around midfielder that can be counted on when the team needs a big play," Fahey said.

Burrell (Calgary, Alberta) was an All-MLC Honorable Mention selection last season and had the duty of guarding the opposition's best midfielder every game. He finished last year second on the team with 24 caused turnovers and 62 ground balls. Burrell was also named as the MLC Defensive Player of the Week last April.

"Burrell has one of the best sticks on our team and can always be counted on to push in transition, which gives us outstanding opportunities to score," Fahey said.

Dahms (Calgary, Alberta) had a season ending injury in 2013, but contributed in practices and on the sidelines with his knowledge and leadership. During the 2011 and 2012 seasons, he was named to the All-MLC Second Team. Dahmns has 33 games during his career and ranks first all-time in program history with 17 man-up goals, second in goals (65) and third in points (90).

"Danny is a very creative player and can handle any defensive matchup that is thrown at him, and he will be expected to be a big contributor this season," Fahey added.

Grenz (Centennial, Colo.) led the Falcons defense last year that was ranked 34th nationally in goals against average (7.56) and fourth in the MLC. The defender earned his first postseason league honor after leading the team with 29 caused turnovers and constantly was asked to guard the oppositions best offensive player for most of the season. Grenz ranks third all-time in program history with 38 caused turnovers. He was also named to the MLC All-Academic Team.

"Chris is a lock-down defender that can always be counted on to help shut the opposing offense down," Fahey said.

Wladyka, (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was named to the All-MLC Honorable Mention team following the 2013 season after tallying 46 points (32 goals, 14 assists), which was a team best. He also picked up 20 ground balls and caused five turnovers during the 2013 season. Wladyka enters his senior season ranked first all-time in program history with 125 points, 88 goals and 138 shots on goal.

"Wladyka is a very solid finisher than can put the ball in the back of the net, and he has a high lacrosse IQ. I am looking forward to having Sam contribute at a high level at the attack position this year," said Fahey."

CUW enters its fourth year as an NCAA division III program when they travel to John Carroll University on Saturday, Feb. 15 for the season opener.
