Men's Lacrosse dominates Dubuque in home opener

MEQUON, Wis. – It didn't take long for Concordia University Wisconsin to put the game out of reach on Saturday, as it led 7-0 after the opening quarter en route to a convincing 23-2 non-conference victory over the University of Dubuque at Fitting Field.

The sub-freezing temperatures and steady snow didn't bother the Falcons, as they outshot the Spartans 49-13 and won 20-of-25 faceoff attempts. They led 13-1 at halftime, which allowed every player that dressed action in the win.

Sophomore Marino Best (Nanaimo, British Columbia) and freshman Colin Raley (Inverness, Ill.) led all scorers with four goals each. Senior Danny Dahms (Calgary, Alberta) added three goals and four other players recorded two scores. Raley's four goals were a career-best.

Best also assisted on four goals, which gave him a career-high eight points – one point shy from tying the single game record. Junior Derek Brueske (Hopkins, Minn.) and freshman Shawn Teixeira (Calgary, Alberta) each assisted on three markers. Teixeira's three helpers were a career-high.

Junior Emmet O'Malley (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) earned the win between the pipe, but it was a team effort as all four goalies saw at least seven minutes of playing time.

CUW (1-1) has now scored over 20 goals five times in program history and the 21-point victory is the fourth best margin in program history. The Falcons ended the contest with 41 points and a program record 18 assists.

Sophomore Zachary Foster (Calgary, Alberta) found the back of the net for the first time in his career midway through the second period. Junior David Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) tallied a career-best two scores, to go along with an assist.

Tyson Svoboda and Javez Vargas each scored for the Spartans (0-4), who are a first-year program.

CUW returns to the field on Saturday, March 8 against Albion College at 1 p.m. at Fitting Field. The Britons have defeated Aurora University and Augustana College in consecutive games, as both were selected to finish first and second in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
