Winning streak ends at defending MLC Champion Spartans

AURORA, Ill. – Concordia University Wisconsin's program record eight-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday with a 13-5 loss at Aurora University during a highly anticipated Midwest Lacrosse Conference game at Vago Field.
CUW couldn't slow AU's offense in the opening half and fell behind 6-1 at the intermission. The Falcons played even with the Spartans in the final 30 minutes of play, but didn't find the offensive spark it needed.
Goals were traded early in the first period before AU found the back of the net six-consecutive time to take a 7-1 advantage with a quarter and a half to play. CUW's offense came back to life with four goals during an 11 minute and 45 second stretch, but it was too late.
The Spartans finished with a 28-16 shots on goal advantage, cleared 26-of-27 attempts and forced 18 turnovers of which nine were caused. On the other hand, the Falcons won 12-of-21 faceoffs and held a 32-28 lead in ground balls. The game was played cleanly with just three penalties called, with the Falcons getting dinged for a personal slashing in the first quarter.
Defensively, sophomore Thomas Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) played well for CUW in goal and finished with a career-high-tying 15 saves, three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Sophomore Matt Garvey (Winnipeg, Manitoba) tallied two goals, while three other Falcons found the back of the net. Junior Derek Brueske (Hopkins, Minn.) had two assists. Senior Kyle Burrell (Calgary, Alberta) and junior Christopher Grenz (Centennial, Colo.) ended with seven and five ground balls, respectively. Faceoff specialist Danny Bundra (Lake Zurich, Ill.) recorded 12 faceoff wins and six ground balls.
AU (8-3, 5-0 MLC) was led by Max Obriecht who had six goals and an assist. Alex Gebben and Justin Bose each scored twice, while Spencer Fuqua picked up a game-high 10 ground balls. Adam Holka earned the win between the pipes after making 10 saves.
CUW (9-3, 4-1 MLC) returns to play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Fontbonne University at Fitting Field.
