CUW Upsets Edgewood to Claim the NACC Crown!
KOHLER, Wis. – The Falcons are going dancing for the first time since 2018! The CUW women's tennis team became the first-ever team to upset the top seed in NACC Tournament history when they knocked off Edgewood in the finals with a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 12-5 on the year and handed Edgewood its first loss of the season at 10-1.
The Eagles took the first point of the match with a victory at No. 1 doubles.
The Blue and White leveled the match at one when freshman Mallory Moen (Neenah, Wis.) and junior Jennifer Mies (Brookfield, Wis.) grounded the Eagles at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
Edgewood held onto a 2-1 lead after doubles and pushed the lead up to 3-1 after the first singles point.
Mallory Moen dragged away Lydia Dean at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3 to cut into the deficit.
After winning some medals at the NACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, freshman Ashley Samuta (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) ran over Sydney Verbauwhede at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
The Eagles pushed the Falcons to the edge of defeat with a victory on court one and leading on courts five and six, but the Falcons never quit.
After falling in the first set, 4-6, junior Elizabeth Johnson (Hubertus, Wis.) forced a third set with a 6-4 victory and then made Kinsey Kessel crumble in the third set, 6-2, tying the match at four.
Jennifer Mies recovered after stumbling in the first set, 1-6, to force a third set with a 6-2 victory. The third set saw the momentum sway on a handful of occasions, but Mies secured the NACC crown with a 6-2 victory in the third set.
The Falcons head back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018. This is the 10th conference tournament title for the Falcons. CUW has claimed the crown in 1994, 1999, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2016, 2017, 2018 and now 2021.
The NCAA will announce the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis bracket on Monday.
