Falcons Soar Past Scarlet Hawks

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW women's soccer team came out on top of a battle of traditional NACC powerhouses on Saturday afternoon against the Scarlet Hawks of Illinois Tech. The Falcons silenced Illinois Tech with a 3-0 victory to improve to 5-1-0 and to 4-0-0 in the NACC.

The two teams had their chances in the first half, but the defenses held strong and did not allow a goal in the first half.

The Falcons struck first in the 50th minute on a header from junior Isabel Downs (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) off a corner pass from Jordan Lafferty (Surprise, Ariz.).

Downs struck again in the 69th minute when the IIT keeper bit too early on junior Selena Esten (Cedarburg, Wis.) and Downs brought in a rebound off Esten.

50 seconds later, Selena Esten found the back of the net off a pass in from junior Karoline Haugland (Bergen, Norway).

Senior Kaeley Sterkel (Dana Point, Calif.) kept her shutout streak alive and posted 12 saves in the victory. Sterkel has not allowed a goal on the season.

Both teams finished with 18 shots on Saturday. Selena Esten led the way with five, as freshman Sheridan Dorge (Winnipeg, Man.) followed right behind with four.

The Falcons return to action on Wednesday at St. Norbert.
