MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons skated away victorious in the home opener on Friday night against St. Benedict. The Falcons picked up a 3-2 victory to improve to 2-0-1 in the young season.
The Falcons started the scoring on Friday night with two goals in the first period.
Freshman Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) found a loose puck and snuck it past the CSB keeper.
The birds then took advantage of a two-on-one breakaway that saw sophomore Amanda Bauer (Waunakee, Wis.) light the lamp off a pass from sophomore Olivia Kurtz (Plainfield, Ill.).
The Bennies broke onto the scoreboard with a power play goal in the second period.
Freshman Jillian Tabaka (Maplewood, Minn.) found a loose puck in front of the CSB net in the third period and inched it across the goal line for her first collegiate goal.
The Red and White added another goal late in the third period with an extra attacker.
Senior Annalina Van Hercke (Castle Rock, Colo.) continued to make some big saves including a last-second shot to preserve the victory.
The senior goalie collected 31 saves in the victory.
The CUW defense killed off four penalties on the evening.
The Bennies held a 33-28 advantage in shots on Friday night.
Sophomore Brooke Gibson (LaSalle, Ont.) was one of four Falcons to register four shots on Friday and also led the flock with 12 faceoff victories.
The two teams will go at it again on Saturday afternoon for round two of the series.
