Softball sweeps Edgewood

VERONA, Wis.- The CUW softball team continued its winning streak on Wednesday afternoon with a pair of 10-2, 10-1 victories to improve to 8-2 on the year.

The Eagles struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning in game one.

Sophomore Gabbi Gaziano and senior Kelsey Bollon tied the game on an error in the third inning.

The game stayed tied at two and went into extra innings.

Junior Kristen Fontana opened the eighth inning scoring in style with a home run.

Kelsey Bollon the scored junior Taylor Kuske and sophomore Ashley Zappa on a single.

A single off the bat of Gaziano later scored Bollon. Freshman Ashley Pagel hammered a double into the gap in right-center field to score junior Alyssa Vilkoski and Gaziano for her first collegiate hit.

Fontana struck again in the eighth inning to send home freshman Jewel Waupekenay.

Freshman Lexi Bridenhagen then singled to score freshman Taylor Liebenow to close the scoring for her first hit.

Junior Nicki Becker earned the victory with three strikeouts. Junior Gina Followell closed the door on the Eagles with three strikeouts to close the game.

The Falcons continued game two with where they left off in the eighth inning.

Sophomore Sydney Erdman started the scoring in the first inning stealing home base. Alyssa Vilkoski then singled up the middle to score Kelsey Bollon.

The Falcons pushed the lead up to 6-0 with four more runs in the second inning.

After an Edgewood run in the fourth inning, CUW tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning to put the mercy rule into effect.

Alyssa Vilkoski had six strikeouts in the victory and Gina Followell added four strikeouts in relief.

CUW returns home on Fruday to host Wisconsin -Oshkosh.
