Softball blasts Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. – The CUW softball team blew Benedictine off the softball diamond on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons swept Benedictine with 9-0 and 11-3 victories to improve to 6-2.

Freshman Madison Wheat scored Sydney Erdmann in the first inning.

Sophomore Gabbi Gaziano blasted a home run to score herself and and sophomore Claudia Utz.

The Falcons broke open the floodgates in the fifth inning.

Junior Taylor Kuske doubled to left-center field to score Madison Wheat and freshman Emily Walters.

Claudia Utz singled in Taylor Kuske and senior Jenna Pozezinski.

A double off the bat of Gabbi Gaziano scored Utz.

Freshman Nicole Grove scored the final run of the game stealing home.

Junior Gina Followell fanned eight batters in the victory.

Gabbi Gaziano finished with a game-high three hits.

Neither team was able to score in the first three innings of game two.

Claudia Utz started the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to score senior Kelsey Bollon.

Junior Krystal Cortes then singled to left field to score Gabbi Gaziano.

The Eagles scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Falcons responded with five runs in the sixth inning.

Sophomore Ashley Zappa had a single that scored Claudia Utz. Sophomore Sydney Erdmann knocked a double that was able to get Zappa and sophomore Abby Kerrins across home plate.

A single from Kelsey Bollon scored Erdmann.

Jenna Pozezinski ended the inning with a bang and sent the ball over the fence to score Kelsey Bollon and herself.

The Falcons added three more runs in the seventh inning. Sydney Erdmann hit a double into the gap in right field to send home Krystal Cortes and Abby Kerrins. Kelsey Bollon scored the final run of the day on a single to score Erdmann.

Junior Nicki Becker finished the victory with four strikeouts. Junior Alyssa Vilkoski shut the door on Benedictine in the seventh inning.  

Claudia Utz kept the Eagles in check on the base paths and did not allow Benedictine to take any bases in game two.

CUW hits the road again on Wednesday at Edgewood.
