Perkins one-hitter helps Softball split with Concordia Chicago

MEQUON, Wis. – Sophomore Melissa Perkins delivered a one-hit shutout in game one as the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Concordia University Chicago Monday afternoon. The Falcons won the opener, 2-0, before falling in the nightcap, 4-0, at the CUW Softball Field.

Game one was all about Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) as she needed just 64 pitches in seven innings of work. Perkins faced just two over the minimum, allowing the hit in the third inning, as she retired 14 of the last 15 batters she faced. She struck out two batters and walked one, improving her record to 6-5.

The Falcons would score their runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of the only CUC error of the game. The Cougars had an errant throw that allowed freshman Nicole Bublitz (Brown Deer, Wis.) and senior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.) to score. CUW finished the opener with three hits, one each coming from junior Katie Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) and freshmen Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) and Jennifer Reicher (Kewaskum, Wis.).

Game two saw the Falcons again limited to just three hits as Andrea Kelly picked up the complete-game victory. Kelly struck out six batters and walked three in keeping the Falcons off balance.

Emily Owens had an RBI double for CUC in the third, making the score 1-0 as the Cougars would add runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Meghan Johnson, Allie Bochat and Emilia Vowell each finished with two hits for CUC.

Landherr added a hit for CUW in game two, while sophomore Marisa Hahn (Northville, Mich.) and freshman Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) also recorded hits in the loss.

Senior Jamie Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) got the game two start for CUW and pitched five innings, allowing two earned and striking out two. Junior Felicia Meyer (Lewiston, Minn.) came on for the final six outs.

CUW (15-15, 9-7 NACC) will return to action tomorrow, visiting Marian University for a NACC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Smith Fields in Fond du Lac.
